Special Information

• This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
• This position is posted as Director of Sports Nutrition, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Dietitian.
• Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College

The Northern Arizona University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 15 men's and women's NCAA Division-I programs with more than 350 student-athlete participants. The university is a member of the Big Sky Conference for all sports with the exception of women's swimming and diving, which competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).

About the Position

The Sports Dietitian provides individual assessment and nutrition coaching, team education, planning and execution of fueling strategies, documentation and reporting of student athlete progress, and practices budgetary management for impact and efficiency. This position is also to provide individuals and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of competitive athletes, on-site and during travel.
Responsibilities Include

30% - Individual Nutrition Counseling

• Assesses and analyzes dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
• Counsels on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases and goals), competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
• Counsel athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.
• Provides personalized meal and snack plans to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health.
• Develops and counsels in hydration protocols.
• Addresses nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia.
• Provides medical nutrition therapy, as needed, to help manage or treat medical conditions.
• Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury.
• Coordinates nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medical/sports science teams.
• Provides liaison with in- and out-patient programs for conditions such as disordered eating.
• Evaluates nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements, for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy in accordance with the NCAA; monitors use of appropriate supplementation.
• Collaborates with the individual's family, physician, coach, and other health professionals, as appropriate.
• Develops resources to support educational efforts.
• Educates athletes in food selection (grocery store tours, food storage) and food preparation (cooking classes).
• Documents nutrition services provided and evaluates the effectiveness of nutrition strategies towards meeting desired outcomes using the Nutrition Care Process.
• Educates and mentors dietetic interns and others as appropriate. - Supervises DTRs, student workers, and employees.

30% - Nutrition Education for Teams, Groups, or Wellness Programs

• Develops and delivers nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on various topics related to nutrition for performance for all NAU teams.
• Recommends appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for individual training, team practice, and competition.
• Provides individual nutrition counseling as needed.
• Serves as a nutrition resource for all athletes, coaches, teachers, trainers, food service personnel, and parents.

20% - Food Service and Menu Development

• Manage Student Athlete High Performance Center fueling station and maintain Coconino County Licensure.
• Coordinates/manages quantity food production and distribution such as developing and managing training table menus and catering.
• Keeps up to date with APSDA and Big Sky fueling requirements and food safety protocols.
• Coordinates nutrition for domestic and/or international travel, for example, catering, hotels, airlines, competition, for individuals and teams.
• Manages budgets for purchasing and distribution of nutritional supplements.
• Develops and delivers nutrition education for food service personnel (The Dub and Hotspot).

10% - Professional Development

• Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.
• Develops and implements an individualized portfolio plan for professional growth and
• development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and development programs.
• Stays abreast of current research on food, nutrition, and health related to sports nutrition.
• Stay aligned with department needs/goals.
• Strategize with team members and other colleagues in the athletics department to align actions with future plans and goals.

5% - Intern Coordinator

• Communicate with intern coordinators and CHHS on campus for internship candidates.
• Plan/Develop intern expectations, guidelines, procedures and assignments.
• Coordinate with HRM and other departments on campus to ensure best practices and experience for all interns.
• Coordinate with CHHS to meet ASCEND requirements.
• Recruit volunteers and paid workers to help run the fueling station.

5% - Other

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or related field.
• 5 years of relevant experience.
• Credentialed as a Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or related field
• 2-5 years of experience working with an Intercollegiate Athletic Population.
• Board certified or eligible for Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

• Knowledge of current physical health, mental health, alcohol and drug use, and social issues on university campuses.
• Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for effecting behavior change.
• Knowledge of current research in nutritional and food sciences.
• Knowledge of documenting services provided in an electronic medical record system.
• Knowledge of patient rights, patient consent, confidentiality and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
• Knowledge of social determinants of health
• Knowledge of health at every size and body image /eating disorders
• Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy, including interviewing and education techniques.
• Knowledge of complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, and nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements.
• Knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.
• Knowledge of measurements of resting metabolic rate, energy expenditure, VO2max, and lactate threshold.
• Knowledge of food service quality and safety procedures.

Compensation

Salary range begins at $58,882. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
